The spirits of Quimbanda are found all around us- they are, by nature, spirits of fire and friction, of the choice and agency present at every Crossroad. But the reach of Exu and Pombagira extends far beyond the Road. Wherever movement and exchange and choice find expression, Exu is there staring. Wherever ambition and attraction pull us, Pombagira is there…

Exu is the blurring of opposition through integration and incorporation, the spark of power and will met with desire and action in every step. How do we kindle this living flame and the spirits who dance in its fire? It is a balance hard won through tempering our relationship with our devils and dead; it is in how we express our desires and fight for what we want in the world around us, wrestling with demons both internal and external. It is through tracing the footsteps of our choices that we come to know these Devils and Companions, and we begin to see their força in the world around us, in the those areas most saturated with their power and presence. Within Quimbanda, these realms have solidified as seven distinct Kingdoms:

O Reino da Praia- The Kingdom of the Beach

O Reino das Matas- The Kingdom of the Woods

O Reino da Kalunga- The Kingdom of the Cemetery

O Reino do Cruzeiro- The Kingdom of the Cross

O Reino da Lira- The Kingdom of the Harp

O Reino das Encruzilhadas - The Kingdom of the Crossroads

O Reino das Almas- The Kingdom of the Souls

Os Sete Reinos de Exu- these Seven Kingdoms of Quimbanda–each have their own hierarchy, affinities, and influences. Each expresses itself differently, tempts us and empowers us differently. These details and nuances color the spirits, and in turn, how we might approach them, and work with them. 

Over nine weeks, we will explore these Kingdoms in depth. First starting with an overview and introduction, we will then spend a week on each Kingdom, exploring not only the Kingdom as its own force, but the rulers of each and the notable spirits found therein, the quality of the kiumbas in that Kingdom, herbs and minerals and animals that, by affinity and rulership, contain the força of each Kingdom. We will then conclude with a final week of integration as we discuss further mapping the sacred onto our landscape, bringing conscious fire to the land we walk to engage with Exu and Pombagira in a deeper, more practical way.

PRE-REQUISITE: To take this course, it is highly recommended you have completed Foundations of Quimbanda (any year its been offered, previously through Wolf & Goat or here at The Pact).

Classes will be Mondays at 9pm Eastern Standard Time, starting in November:

• December 1, 8, 15, 22, 29

  Classes will be at least 90 minutes each in length.
